Honoring my inner hermit

I never ever thought I’d be saying this, but … I’ve decided to deactivate or delete most of my social media accounts. What started out almost 10 years ago as a way to connect easily with people around the world turned into a very time-consuming endeavor. Let’s see, there’s Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram, just to name the main channels. And they all take daily attention to answer comments and questions as well as the time to create and post something uplifting and inspirational. I am definitely not complaining. I’m just recognizing that so much of my daily schedule has been taken up with my online life.

To be fair, I’ve made amazing friends through these websites that I most likely would never have met any other way. It’s been a true joy to connect and reconnect with old and new friends alike. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to touch and be touched by some many wonderful people. And I especially love sharing ideas with like-minded people, even if they live far away. It’s been a great experience.

But lately I feel a strong urge to honor my inner hermit and log out of the majority of my accounts. I want to go back to nurturing myself and my family without the peripheral distraction I’ve come to expect as “normal” over the past few years. I want to stop checking my computer and my cell phone all the time and get back to my writing, reading, yoga, hiking, nature walks with Peter, cooking, singing, piano playing, crocheting, etc.

For now, I’ll keep my Instagram account active. (You’re welcome to join me there for a daily quote and occasional photo.) I will also leave my YouTube account open in case I want to upload a video now and again. And finally, my Pinterest boards will stay online. But, at this point, the rest have been deactivated as of January 1st.

Once I’ve re-grounded and regrouped, I can decide if Facebook fits back into the picture. I’m not sure if or when that might be. I have to admit that I’m a bit nervous about this decision, as social media has been such a big part of my life for almost a decade. But I am also excited to make new habits, remember old ones, and enjoy more quietude. Perhaps I will manage my social media time differently in the future and work it back into my schedule. Or perhaps I will walk off into the woods and make nature my prime media channel.

Either way, I am going to honor my inner hermit and spend some quality alone time. I just don’t want to look up from my cell phone one day and realize that the whole world has passed me by.

Sending you love and hugs,
Katrina

P.S.: A few months ago, Peter and I got together with our friends Bud and Heather Jeffries. They’re such a joy and a pleasure to be around. They know how to uplift each other and everyone around them. They’re the kind of people we love spending our time with. The good news is that Heather and I captured Peter and Bud speaking about their Keys to Limitless Living. They put together a beautiful program that’s so easy to follow and is filled with inspiring gems. This program is the perfect gift for yourself and/or someone you love. Click on this link for more information on the Keys to Limitless Living. Enjoy!
